What Are My Options for Tooth Repair?

A chipped, cracked, decayed, or otherwise damaged tooth can affect more than the appearance of your smile. Depending on the extent of the damage, it may also cause sensitivity, discomfort, or difficulty chewing. Fortunately, modern dentistry offers several ways to repair damaged teeth and restore their appearance and function.

The right treatment will depend on what happened to your tooth, how much healthy tooth structure remains, and your overall oral health. Here are some common options your dentist may recommend.

Dental Fillings

Fillings are commonly used to repair teeth affected by cavities or minor damage. Your dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth and replaces it with a filling material, helping restore the tooth’s shape and prevent the decay from progressing.

Dental Bonding

For small chips, cracks, gaps, or other minor imperfections, dental bonding may be an option. A tooth-colored composite material is applied and shaped to blend with your natural tooth. Bonding is typically a conservative treatment that requires minimal alteration of the tooth.

Inlays and Onlays

When damage is too extensive for a traditional filling but does not require a full crown, an inlay or onlay may be recommended. These custom restorations replace damaged areas while preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown covers the visible portion of a weakened or significantly damaged tooth. Crowns can restore the tooth’s strength, shape, and appearance and may be recommended for teeth with large fillings, cracks, significant decay, or damage following root canal treatment.

Root Canal Treatment

If decay or damage reaches the inner pulp of a tooth, root canal treatment may be necessary. During treatment, the infected or damaged tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. A crown is often placed afterward to protect the remaining tooth.

Tooth Replacement

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged to repair and needs to be removed. If this happens, options such as a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture can replace the missing tooth and help restore your ability to bite and chew.

Find the Right Treatment for Your Tooth

Not every damaged tooth requires the same solution. The sooner you have a chipped, cracked, painful, or decayed tooth evaluated, the sooner your dentist can determine the extent of the damage and discuss your repair options.
